Batič Wines

Šempas, Slovenia (Vipava Valley)

Anno Domini 1592. The first wines at the Batič estate in Šempas were made by monks, pressing Mass wine in the same stone buildings where the family lives and works today. More than four centuries later the murals have faded and the monks' names are forgotten, but the vocation never left the property.

Today Miha Batič and his family farm around twenty hectares in the Vipava Valley, a corridor of vineyards between the Alps and the Adriatic where the fierce burja wind batters the vines clean and the soils run to flysch, marl, and sandstone. The estate is fully biodynamic, certified by Demeter, and the philosophy runs deeper than any certificate. Ivan, Miha's father, has turned over the winery completely to Miha now and we're experiencing Miha's creative focus in full.

The vineyards are a living archive of Vipava's native grapes: Zelen, Pinela, Rebula, Klarnica, Malvazija — varieties that grow almost nowhere else on earth — alongside Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, long macerations in big Slovenian oak, and patience. This has long been the Batič family way... and we're so glad it is.
