Bolfan Vinski Vrh

Tomislav Bolfan farms a hilltop in Hraščina, in the rolling green hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje, northwest Croatia. Vines have grown here on and off for two thousand years — local legend traces the site back to a Roman military post that once crowned this very hill. Today it's called Vinski Vrh: Wine Peak.

From the beginning, Bolfan set out to prove that Zagorje — long overshadowed by Croatia's coast — could make serious wine, and to do it the hard way: certified organic farming, estate fruit only, on a largely self-sufficient farm where cattle graze alongside the vineyards. Twenty hectares of vines climb the slopes on loose, well-drained soils, cooled by continental air and long autumns that keep the wines bright and taut.

The Bolfan range leans aromatic and fresh — Riesling above all, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Graševina, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris — wines with nerve, minerality, and the crunch of cool-climate fruit. Tomislav's wines have received medals from Decanter, but the real reward is simpler: Zagorje wine is having a massive renaissance, and Tomislav Bolfan helped to lead the way.
