Vinarství Kacetl
Mackovice, Czech Republic (Moravia)
Michal Kacetl grew up in his grandfather's vineyard and cellar in Mackovice, a small village in southern Moravia, just above the Austrian border. In 2018, while still at university, he started a winery of his own — and the first vines he took over were his grandfather's.
It's a uniquely tiny operation: currently about a hectare of vines split between the old family plot in Mackovice — Frankovka, Pinot Noir, and Müller Thurgau on light sandy-loam over ancient gravel terraces — and the Pustina vineyard in nearby Božice, planted to Veltlínské Zelené and Chardonnay. Slightly less than ten thousand bottles a year, all of it farmed and made with a light hand: spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention, and as little moving of the wine as possible.
Alongside oak barrels, Michal ferments and ages wine in qvevri imported from Georgia and in stoneware amphorae made in the Czech Republic. Whites wines see a few days on the skins; reds ferment on the skins for weeks and rest in oak for at least ten months.
Michael is also a member of Svéhlaví — "the Headstrong" — a band of four young Moravian wineries pushing natural wine forward together. And as if winemaking wasn't enough, Michal also trains and shows horses. He has ridden since he was six and keeps two Lipizzaners; the horse walks the hill of the label the way he walks his vineyards — patiently, and on his own path.
