The Rokovi wine house sits just under the Biljana hill, in the very middle of Goriška Brda, where west-facing slopes bask in the long afternoon sun. It's a true family operation — brothers Andrej and Simon Sirk make the wine, having grown up working the vines alongside their father and grandparents, and on any sunny day the whole family is out in the rows.
There's a story they were told as kids: on the hilltop called Boskonovo, with its view over all of southern Brda, retreating Turkish soldiers once buried a golden goat. For years treasure hunters dug holes and found nothing. The family likes to say they finally found it — in the glass. "Rok," the root of their name, means ram in the local dialect, and "the golden taste" has been the house promise ever since.
The wines live up to the legend's gentler moral: smooth, ripe, and elegant rather than showy. Sauvignon Vert — Brda's signature grape — leads the whites alongside Rebula and a Chardonnay that balances freshness with buttery depth. The Malvazija Orange, from a single parcel of old west-facing vines near the winery, is maceration with a light touch, and the Cabernet Sauvignon ranks among the region's best.
