Thomas & Claudia Hareter

Weidem am See, Austria (Burgenland)

The Hareter family has farmed in Weiden am See, on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, since 1725. Thomas and Claudia took over the winery in 2011 and have run it as a team ever since — first converting the estate to organics, then going all the way to biodynamics, certified today by both Demeter and Bio Austria. For them it was never a marketing decision. It was the only honest way to farm.

Their vineyards sit on sandy, gravelly hills above the village, where the warm Pannonian plain meets the moderating breath of the lake. Herbs and wildflowers grow between the rows; the soil stays alive. The focus is local: Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch for reds, Pinot Blanc and Welschriesling for whites. In the cellar, nothing added and nothing taken away — hand-picked fruit, spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal filtration. Wines with character, that taste like where they're from.
